Is one of your rooms looking a little bare? Maybe it’s time for a new area rug! A great rug can add warmth and personality to any room, but also serves several practical purposes. Rugs can help protect hardwood floors, warm up cold tile, or dampen sound. But how do you choose the right area rug for your Shallotte home? Here are some tips from our Floor Coverings International Shallotte experts:
For an area rug to look good in a room, you have to get the size right. It’s a common mistake to choose a rug that’s too small, so if in doubt, err on the larger side.
In a living room, all the furniture pieces should be the same distance from the edge of the rug. This could mean that all the furniture pieces will be a few inches from the rug, all pieces will have the front two legs on the rug, or all pieces will be entirely on the rug. In a dining room, the rug should be large enough that you can pull out each chair at the table and still have all the legs sitting on it. And in a bedroom, make sure the rug extends 18 to 24 inches beyond the sides and end of the bed.
Wool is one of the most common fibers used in area rugs. It’s durable, soft, and stain-resistant, making it a great choice for most rooms. However, be wary of tufted wool rugs, which will tend to shed and require regular vacuuming.
Cotton rugs are also a practical choice for their versatility and ease of maintenance. Though cotton is less durable than wool, it’s easy to clean and often machine-washable.
Natural fibers like jute, sisal, bamboo, and sea grass are typically used for woven or braided constructions. Natural fibers are eco-friendly and affordable, but can be slightly scratchy or rough underfoot. They are also highly absorbent, so avoid using natural fiber rugs in high-moisture environments.
Synthetic fibers like polypropylene and polyester are versatile and durable. Because they’re stain-resistant and easy to clean, synthetic fiber rugs make a good choice for high-traffic areas like hallways and outdoor spaces.
Care & Maintenance
There are a few things you can do to keep your rug looking its best. Firstly, rotate it several times a year so that it doesn’t get overly worn or faded in certain spots. Secondly, read your rug’s label before cleaning it – some may be machine-washable, while others are dry clean only. And lastly, always use a rug pad! Rug pads add extra cushion, prevent slipping, and reduce friction between the rug and the floor.
